American Machine Age Lighting

Mark Okun, General Manager, Restoration Lighting Gallery

American Machine Age is a term associated with the early 20th century (1918-1941), and was deeply rooted in the Industrial Age in America. Key developments of the American Machine Age include, mass production of high volume products such as cars, radio and phonograph technology, long distance travel by train, aircraft and automobiles and modern war machines.

Another important characteristic of the American Machine Age was streamlined designs that were influenced by aircraft design. American streamlined design influenced art and was carried through into lighting design as well. Below are some vintage pieces from the Machine Age era. All of these pieces have been carefully restored to their original glory by our expert craftsmen at Restoration Lighting gallery.

If you have an older piece in this design style we would be happy to bring it back to light for you!

Save Your Home & Your Life With Free Lamp Safety Inspections!

lamp fire

A photo of an actual lamp that caught on fire

Home fires can occur for numerous reasons: faulty electrical wires, oil fires from cooking, unattended candles, improperly disposed matches, natural disasters...but, they can also be caused by aging lamps.

Fires can be started in the socket of your favorite lamp after years of daily use. Most people don’t realize the huge levels of heat that build up in the wiring of a lamp. Over time, electrical components degrade, become brittle, and can become a fire hazard.

Here at Restoration Lighting Gallery, we never want a lamp fire to happen in your home. That is why we offer FREE lamp safety inspections. Simply bring in your lamp and our lighting experts will make sure it is fit for operation.

We will check the wiring, the socket and overall operation of the lamp. Should your lamp need repair or new parts, our repair specialists offer lamp repair services. We will also help you pick the right replacement parts from sockets, wires to pull chains. And, while you are here, why not check out our incredible stock of lamp shades and finials! Your lamp will leave safe, renewed and ready to shine.

Here are a few tips to keep your home safe from lamp fires:

1.    Take any older lamps that get daily use to Restoration Lighting Gallery for a FREE safety inspection.

2.    Always turn off your lamps before leaving your home for any period of time.

3.    Never install a bulb that is rated higher than the socket allows.

4.    Consider using LED bulbs in all lamps. They last 12 to 20 times longer than incandescent bulbs, are cool to the touch and use only 1/10 of the energy. Restoration Lighting Gallery & Connecticut Lighting Centers (located directly across the street from our showroom) carries an extensive collection of LED bulbs.

Visit our showroom to get your lamp inspected. It could save your valuable possessions, your home and even your life!

The Design of the 1930's Come To Light With Art Deco Lighting

Mark Okun, General Manager, Restoration Lighting Gallery

Art Deco is a visual arts design style that first appeared in France during the 1920’s and was popular throughout the 30’s and 40’s. Art Deco emerged from the Interwar period where there was rapid industrial growth. The result was a style that embraced technology with machine imagery and bold geometric shapes. In America, the Art Deco movement represented luxury, glamour and technological progress during the “roaring 20’s”.

At Restoration Lighting Gallery, the design of the 1930's comes to light. We have a constantly changing inventory of Art Deco pieces ranging from chandeliers, sconces to table and floor lamps. Below is just a sample of the beautiful Art Deco pieces we have available. All of these pieces have been carefully restored to their original beauty.

Paul Dalfino (r) and Dave Poppel (l).

How do you take an old neglected light and make it shine brilliant once again? Meet the craftsmen behind Restoration Lighting Gallery: Paul Dalfino and Dave Poppel—the miracle workers of vintage, antique lighting.

Restoration Lighting Gallery is an exclusive lighting, restoration, repair and shade boutique. The hundreds of antique, vintage pieces you see on display at Restoration Lighting Gallery are from 60 plus years of combined experience and passion for repainting, refinishing, and repairing rare, one-of-a-kind lighting fixtures from all over the world. Dalfino and Poppel take pride in their work and put their heart and soul into every piece. To them, every light has a story and every story is unique.

While Restoration Lighting Gallery is part of the Connecticut Lighting Centers family, the two showrooms are centuries apart.  When you step into the Restoration Lighting Gallery showroom, you will be transported to a different world. It is the emotional side of the Connecticut Lighting Centers family. Each piece has history and sentimental value.

Poppel and Dalfino bring those old feelings to light. Dalfino and Poppel have worked as a team for over 16 years and have made a reputation for themselves creating lighting from keepsakes and family heirlooms. Poppel is the “Dave of all trades” having mastered blacksmithing, welding, building custom furniture and restoring old houses and barns. Dalfino has been in the business of restoration since  he was little, who helped his father with his own restoration business. Restoration and repair is their passion.

“We also love to create unique lighting using objects you wouldn’t expect --from violins, sneakers, saxophones to a Harley Davidson motorcycle seat”, says Dalfino. “We don’t like to say no. We’ll make a light out of anything! In the end, it’s about bringing a story to light,” added Dalfino.

We Take Lighting Personal

Mark Okun, General Manager, Restoration Lighting Gallery

At Restoration Lighting Gallery, we believe that every lighting fixture in your home should be a personal choice. The lighting should meet your needs and reflect your style. This idea held true for a custom lighting project we completed for a customer. This whole-home lighting project included carefully selected fixtures and a custom hand-crafted pendant fixture.

Custom Pendant Light

The highlight of the project was no doubt, the pendant light in the dining area. Everything about the fixture was customized. This cutting edge piece was designed by our experts and includes a custom fused glass bowl and colors that were hand-picked by the customer. The piece was designed to reflect light off the barrel ceiling to create a feeling of ambience.

For the rest of the home lighting fixtures from Hubbardton Forge, Kichler, Tech Lighting and a ceiling fan from Fanimation, were selected with the customer and home in mind. Every fixture was hand-selected and no detail went unnoticed. Custom Pendant

In the end, the customer has a well lit home that reflects their personal style, and is functional.

Tis The Season To Be Melancholy?

Even though it’s the time of year for red and green, we have some “Noir” pieces that will light up your home!

Noir, French for black, was coined in the 40’s and 50’s as a genre of literature and cinema. It is also used to describe high-end fashion that is primarily black and draws inspiration from the Victorian Era. There is also Pinot Noir, a black grape wine, and Coco Noir, a “mysterious” perfume.

Noir Rose Italian Vintage Chandelier

But, these pieces are “Noir” in a whole new way.  They are dark, elegant mysterious, but also airy and luminescent with their unique stunning designs.

For example, take this Noir Rose Italian Vintage Chandelier (right). This Circa 1950 piece has a smooth black finish. Hand formed flowers and petals add elegance that is anything but “bleak.” This piece would make the perfect chandelier in a variety of settings.

Vintage Italian The Vintage Italian Noir Rose Black Floral Pendant (left) is a perfect match to the chandelier. It features intricately twisted vines with rosebuds and leaves. This Circa 1950 basket pedant will make for a grand entrance to a foyer.

Custom Lighting Project Turns On The Charm

Mark Okun, General Manager, Restoration Lighting Gallery

Custom Foyer Light

Paul Dalfino, Expert Craftsman at Restoration Lighting
Gallery, wires a custom foyer light.

As part of Restoration Lighting Galleries’ services, we provide custom lighting design for homeowners, restaurants, casinos, churches and commercial buildings. When a customer came across a unique opportunity to obtain two hand painted pieces of Italian glass, she came to us to design a custom chandelier and foyer light for her. We were excited to jump right in and worked our magic.

The glass for these pieces was a fabulous find—a very fine, expensive hand painted Italian glass that has beautiful curves. Fine Italian Glass

For this project, we electrified both pieces and created a suspension system that was camouflaged by the silk strings and adornments of the piece, so it would not draw attention to the stainless steel aircraft cables. The aircraft cables made it possible to securely hang these fixtures from a ceiling.

The end result was pure charm. The elegant chandelier and matching foyer light emits an ethereal glow when lit—highlighting the unique hand painted designs. Its traditional beauty is enchanting. The client was thrilled with the finished pieces and could not wait to hang them over her dining area and hallway.

Twisted Rococo Elegance

Mark Okun, General Manager at Restoration Lighting Gallery

Rococo Influence Griffin Head Chandelier in Antique Brass, c. 1945

The expert craftsmen at Restoration Lighting Gallery restore unique one-of-a-kind treasures every day. We like to say every light has a story and every story is unique. This mantra is our motivation for every piece that we apply our craft to. However; every once in while a very special piece comes along and we revel in its unique beauty.

This unique Rococo Influenced Griffin Head Chandelier Circa 1945 is one of those pieces. It has been carefully restored, and brought back to light. Its stunning warm antique brass finish glows with European grandeur.

It features detailed Griffin Heads cast in brass. The Griffin is a legendary creature that has the body of lion and the head and wings of an eagle. The Griffin was thought to be especially powerful and majestic creature—a perfect representation of this grand chandelier.

Rococo, meaning shell or pebble work, is from an 18th century artistic movement that originated in Paris, France. Rococo style was a reaction against the Baroque Art, which was symmetrical and rigid. Rococo artists created soft, graceful art that had gold and curved designs with foliate and floral motifs. The Rococo influences are evident in this chandelier with its curved details and twisted cast arms engulfed in the warm gold-like brass finish. The arms have up and down lights with torch style frosted shades that are held in place with floral bobesche cups.

This newly added piece quickly became a favorite in our showroom. With the right home, it will add elegance, style and history.

Learn more about this piece and visit our showroom to see it in its full glory. You can also view more Rococo style lighting and home decor on our estore.

Top Your Lamp Off With A New Flavor Shade

Mark Okun, General Manager at Restoration Lighting Gallery

In this video, Mark Okun, General Manager, shows you how
to dress up your lamp with a new lamp shade and finial.

We fuss with every paint color, floor finish and window treatment. We refuse to settle for a plain white or vanilla.  But, what about your lamps? Lamps are an integral part of your interior design. With the right shade, they can look stunning and add to your home’s design esthetic.

Here at Restoration Lighting Gallery, we like to call ourselves the ice cream shop of lamp shades—we have nearly every flavor lamp shade in stock. We carry over 1,000 lamp shades—every style, color, design and size! We can even make your shade to order with virtually any fabric or material – yours or ours!

Most people do not realize the immense choices they have when selecting shades.  For us, picking the perfect shade is an art. A different style shade can give your lamp a whole new look. We can fit that shade properly just by changing the harp to raise or lower the shade, so it will sit in the proper position on the lamp.  The type of material you select for your shade can change the light emitted from the lamp.

At Restoration Lighting Gallery we have professional lamp shade fitters to help you pick the perfect shade and make your lamp pop.  Our experts will work with you one on one to top off your lamp. Most sessions take 30 minutes or less.  All you need is to bring in your lamp and an open mind, and we will also do a free safety inspection to assure safe and continued use of your lamp.

Looking for the cherry topping for your lamp? Add a unique finial for a finishing touch. We have hundreds of finials in stock in a variety of styles and shapes.

The end result is a complete makeover for your lamp, and you will have peace of mind knowing that your lamp is safe for operation. Visit our showroom to learn more and speak with our lamp shade fitters to get started.

The Great Church Light Restoration at Rocky Hill Congregational Church

A grand chandelier lights the main sanctuary in the Rocky Hill Congregational Church. From circa 1890, this chandelier was originally fit for oil burners and was called “The Great Church Light” by Isaac P. Frink, the inventor of the best silver-plated corrugated crystal glass reflectors available at the time.  Around 50 years ago, the fixture was wired for electricity and had since been untouched. The Rocky Hill Congregational Church, with its large clock tower, has been a beloved town landmark for over 200 years. In celebration of this, the church has begun a number of renovation projects, including the repair and restoration of their Great Church Light.

rocky-hill-congregational-church.jpg

Restoration Lighting Gallery was contacted to take on this project. Bringing it back to light seemed only a dream for the congregation, until the skilled craftsmen at Restoration Lighting Gallery paired with a team of professional electricians to transform the chandelier into a majestic beauty. The restoration was completed in an incredibly short period of time and the chandelier was reinstalled on a brand new lift system, provided by Restoration Lighting Gallery, in time for the Rocky Hill Congregational Church’s Easter Sunday service.

“The restoration was really well done - it was timely and professional and our congregation has responded positively. This was perfect for our 200 year celebration!” - Arlene Painter, Church Director

“This is a great example of a multifaceted project coming together successfully to completion. The coordination of electrical contractors, glass manufacturers, and our superior craftsmen couldn’t have fallen together better. A project of this magnitude would have taken several months to complete under normal circumstances and we did it in a fraction of the time.” - Mark Okun, General Manager of Restoration Lighting Gallery

Bringing your heirlooms to light.

Turn your family heirloom into a one-of-a-kind table or floor lamp at Restoration Lighting Gallery.

Every light has a story, and every story is unique.

This antique golf bag belonged to our client’s grandfather.  She loved the bag’s vintage style and it had tremendous sentimental value to her family.  She didn’t want it to just gather dust in the attic, so what a clever idea to turn it into a floor lamp!   She brought it to us and we worked together to design this one-of-a-kind floor lamp. Now she has a great lighting fixture that has true meaning to the family.

Remember that lighting can come in all shapes and sizes.  Every week, we turn beloved family heirlooms into interesting table lamps, floor lamps, sconces and even chandeliers.  Come visit us to learn more, and stay tuned for more inspiration.
